When Futurama came out I remember thinking that it was clear where everyone was spending their time and energy, but it wasn't until they went to Brazil that I stopped watching.

To be fair, the dude is getting up there in age. Retirement wouldn't be all that out of the question. Hard to think about how he was in his 40s when he took on the role. God damn. Come to think of it, a lot of the voice actors must be getting up there.
Looking at the people who have died, they have a fair number of voices that passed in their 70s. And considering his deep voice, I'm willing to bet he indulges in some less than healthy activities.
If he were retiring outright I'd think he had a good run and wish him well. He's just declining to continue that one character for the sake of his own skin color. He still does dozens of other characters and those will remain, so this is just another cowtow to diversity, which seems petty to me after so long and nobody complaining.
