It's not even going to be a six months thing. They're slating it for a two month takeover, and then the prior storylines will resume after that. They're basically bumping two months' worth of content on the calendar for a chance at a quick sales pop and to float a trial balloon to see if readers will bite on the new characters or if there will be backlash on it. They know that two months is the limit on sales bumps for new characters because everyone wants to grab the first issue of a new series or a character's first appearance, then sales numbers usually get cut in half for the second issue, and then in half again for the third issue. If they only run it for two then they miss the 3rd issue drop as well as being able to weather the storm on a potential blow-up.
What they're missing is the other general backlash over it being a huge shared world event. Sure, there will be some sales boosted from it, but overall readers have become more apathetic to "event" storylines and the required cross-buy to get the whole story.
Also, for what it's worth, I do recall there being a little bit of rumbling from the BB and Batgirl fans back in the day when they introduced Jaime or Cassandra, but you're right, eventually the storytelling won the readers over.

When they went woke as fuck with Black Panther, announced the retcon shoehorn of Captain Marvel into the MCU, and that they weren't going to be using Adam Warlock for the Infinity War, that's where I (and I assume many other people) checked the fuck out. I stuck with it to see out the end of the arc, but once Endgame was done that was it for me and trying to watch every MCU movie.

In my entire life, I've never seen someone who was behind the curve in a class magically turn it around and suddenly become a A+ tier student in the period of a semester or a year. Even if they did, that still means they were screwing it up at the beginning, so if they were a "master" (oops, can't say that word anymore) proficient student at the end of the semester, their aggregate grade accurately depicts their overall progress.

Meaning the student can go up to the teacher, say "I'LL SUCK YO DIIIIICK", and walk out with an A after wiping off their chin, because that has about as much value as their proposed grading system.
