When the league expanded in the early 1990s, the new Tampa Bay Lightning brought in a female goalie, Manon Rheaume--but she only played in the preseason exhibition games, and got cut before the season started. She never played a "real" NHL game.
Reportedly she sucked in the net, too, allowing at least four goals a game that preseason.
It's now widely believed that Rheaume was a publicity stunt.
