The NFL is one of the worst products on tv. It has timed quarters that add up to an hour and it takes three hours to get through a game that has 10 minutes worth of actual kinetic game play. Seriously if you took a stopwatch and started it whenever the ball was live and in play, and stopped it whenever the ball wasn't live, you'd get around ten minutes.
That’s because you don’t get the sport. Football is determined more by the lineup and formation before the snap than the “kinetic gameplay” portion. It’s like complaining that golf only has a short amount of kinetic gameplay. The NFL is one of the worst products on tv because they do everything to expand viewership instead of actually making the sport understandable. That’s why you get retarded halftime shows and everything dumbed down for 60 IQs and women.
I "get" the sport. Blowhards pretending it's complicated are fucking cringe. Soccer has strategies and formations but it also has kinetic game play. Hockey has strategies and formations but it also has kinetic game play.

I watched football for most of my youth and for most of my 30s.
MPetey is 100% correct. It used to be more tolerable when the down-time was filled with color commentary and crowd noise; part of the fun was the tension and anticipation.
Now every time the clock stops they just cut to commercial. It's a miserable, unwatchable product. And that's ignoring all of the rule changes that neuter defenses and questionable refereeing that always seems to benefit the larger market teams.

Yes, and I'm agreeing that there are only 10-15 minutes of actual kinetic gameplay, but it still used to be fun to watch because the rest of the time was game-related and not just an endless stream of pharma company and beer advertisements.
