In a recent interview, Neon Genesis Evangelion director Hideaki Anno shared his impressions of the Japanese content industry going global.
Based. The thing is, most of the audience doesnt even need to adapt. The retards clamoring for Japan to adapt to them are a very loud and very obnoxious minority that has significant institutional backing. The bulk majority of the audience wants Japan to keep making stuff their own way.
Is the correct answer.
While NGE is something i have enjoyed from time to time, I do not expect everything made by the creators to suit me. I am not their sole target and should not be their entire focus, and conversely no company should ever try to please everyone as that's never possible. Chasing untapped markets frequently results in the oldguard being shunned and leaving because what initially attracted them no longer exists, and if the new markets fails then that's nothing but viewer losses, as Star Wars showed when Disney took over.
This. I frankly found NGE to be highly overrated, yet it has a loyal following. Good for them, I'll be over here watching Gurren Lagann
His work is proof of that, if you EVER have had depression in your life, you get a lot deeper meaning from Evangelion than just monsters, shadowy organisations and giant robots.
Something that would have definitely been lost appealing to a 'global audience' as the strength of anime is that it can be niche and have a thousand different ways of telling the same story.
I disagree with this take as someone who was diagnosed with depression as a youth and has watched Evangelion. I wholeheartedly reject any analysis of Evangelion as "deep and meaningful". It is without a doubt the most overrated anime out there.
Ok that's your opinion and I have a different one especially after watching the rebirth films.
Besides it's not the most overrated anime, that's rent a girlfriend as it still has a score..
It's worth mentioning that Anno hates his fans so much that he dedicated Rebuild of Evangelion to shit all over them. So there's some bias and bitterness in what he's saying.
As a big fan of Eva, I loved Rebuild, more than the original.
God speed!
And that is fine. Ultimately, a creator must create for themselves. And sometimes, that leads to failure in the market, making for target market of one, and other times, leads to success, but when you only create for a committee, you'll never make anything great.
Correct. The audience will either like it and get it, or they won't. Be faithful to your own material and you'll win people over more than not and those who you didn't won't hate you, they will just say nah, not my thing.
Watering down your product is rarely a good idea!
Make good product & people will like it.
