Once you’ve triggered a person’s foe distinction, it’s almost impossible to reverse it. It doesn’t really matter if time proves you right. They will never get over the negative emotions they felt when you “betrayed” them.

Having to come to terms with that and accept that your old life was a sham is oftentimes too hard for indoctrinated people to accept.
There is no need to. If someone doesn't actually want to change it is impossible to help them. You cannot force people to change. That's a universal rule. Doesn't matter if it involves politics or anything else.
No point in wasting your time with it. The only thing you can do is wait until they might become willing to change and then you can always try again to help them.

It's hard for guys like us who can do second order thinking and have decency in our hearts to accept that kind of thing, or at least it was a lesson that took me a long time to internalize.
