Do leftists just think all it will take for them to gain the pre Gamergate level of control over the Right is for Trump to die? You can't put this genie back into the bottle without killing the genie.
Yes, they do believe that. Because they believe it was only because of him that people got "brave" enough to be "openly bigoted" to fight back against them. Because like in many other cases, they reverse cause and effect and dont realize that Trump was the effect, not the cause. So they think that if they get rid of Trump they are getting rid of cause, and not that people will just find a new Trump. Or worse, will find someone more extreme than Trump (because they also refuse to admit Trump is actually fairly moderate and in line with most Americans, they just think he is too crass).
Yeah. I think some people on this sub just think he's Bush Jr. 2.0, but even if this sub stops supporting him the left might think that he's basically the closest thing we have to electing a fascist. But at the same time, I could see that those on the left who believe that he's responsible for all of the growing backlash to their cause might also think that once he leaves office, everything will go back to normal as long as the democrats win the presidency.
Not to mention that Gamergate as a whole might be used as a scapegoat for those who don't see him as the source of all this.

Donald Trump is their scapegoat. Kill the scapegoat and their god will forgive them and everything will go back to "normal."
Unironically yes, that seems to be the case. They've created this Voldemort/Sauron idea of him in their mind that once he dies everyone will just give up and kill themselves in despair, or simply never be able to rise up again to resist them.
You have to remember they think "beliefs" are something given to people, instead of being something you create for yourself, because that's how they work. So if you remove Trump, the one "creating" these evil thoughts, then people will stop thinking them.
Modern media has done a poor job of showing that simply killing the enemies leader without a magical (or in the case of Yugoslavia, almost magical) reason for holding their organization together doesn’t simply eliminate the enemy. Which is funny, considering we spent 20 years in the sandbox proving that exact point.
Ironically, they love to show the "cycle of revenge" story (and then demand you be the bigger man and end it after they take from you), which is just as likely to happen if they do anything to Trump as the "his base continues his legacy even without him" option.
They honestly see themselves as the scrappy underdogs in any situation. They're the rebel alliance. They're Dumbledore's army. They're marginalized and striking from the shadows. They're siding with whoever is losing a war, thinking that somehow it makes that side morally superior.
They're fucking stupid.
But I have to hand it to whoever thought it up and uploaded this programming, because they've successfully turned the useful idiots into willing kamikaze martyrs for whatever cause of the moment. They'll run into a simple argument, get stomped, and come out of it thinking they took on Goliath and survived because they're main character or whatever when in reality they have the entire establishment watching their back.
