They're made as an ideological show of force to remind us that the rich and powerful have the resources to dump 300 million dollars into what amounts to a 90 minute long Reddit post. Every time a movie like this comes out, it's just Hollywood saying "we're still in control and you can't do anything about it".
The wrong people enjoyed 2049 for the wrong reasons and now must be humiliated and corrected.
