It’s been obvious for a long time that quality tends to fall in mid priced goods. This is true in most markets, outliers always exist but brand naming sells higher than quality on most commodities.
If anything, it's the most expensive stuff that gets ruined if you so much as breathe on them wrong.

Why not? Which brand offers the best, most durable product is useful information to have, but you'd never buy enough shirts from different brands to find out the answer for yourself.
Then the very instant people start buying that brand in larger numbers, they'll tank the quality to harvest profits before doing it again with another brand.

So many other factors play into pricing. Materials, labor sourcing, branding, utility. I think it would be better to check how things compare within brands to get a little more insight on the marketplace.
I bought 2 t-shirts on sale for $1.44 each back in the 80's. One is still worn regularly, the other got too holey a few years back.
Other cheap shirts have had various results. But since I rarely buy anything 'expensive' I can't really compare. :/
