Tbf, none of them really became entrenched in society until they had apps on smartphones with the perk that most of their userbase was glued to their account 24/7 with instant gratification via push notifications on a device that was rarely more than 2 or 3 feet away.
One could argue smartphones actually killed myspace, or was at least the final nail in the coffin, but facebook was bland af and soulless from the beginning and easily adapted its boring UI to smartphone users.
Same with eHarmony other older dating sites vs all the swipe right/left dating apps.
Same with image files. Everything MUST be .webp, .avif or .heic, and the especially annoying part is many big websites have automated scripts which still show the images as their original file format, but save as .webp if you try to right-click them.
.webp has extremely limited support in a lot of image and video editing tools, and for the other two don't even bother. I have an extension that auto-converts them to .jpg or .png but the point is I shouldn't have to. The point of .webp's existence was for turdworlders whose internet speed is slower than the shit in their rivers. Any perceived performance or file size gain is negligible in this day and age if you live in a civilized country.
It's phone font. Everything must be scalable, monospaced, and san serif for maximum readability on a digital screen.
Has nobody told them phones have decent resolutions now?
Do they not have phones?
I don't think it's the resolutions, I think it's that they're too damn small.
The smart phone is my singular most hated piece of technology that we've created so far.
Social media/dating apps are worse. They are the real cancer to society.

Exactly. None of those things were really a problem until you remove the opportunity cost of having to sit down at a computer to login.
Now we have a whole society of heroin addicts and everyone's just walking around as if nothing is wrong.

Says the guy who's clearly never tried to pack high resolution maps into less than multiple terabytes.
When I right-click on a funny meme to save it, I expect it to give me a .jpg. Anything less is barbarism.
