No one in this discussion has yet to figure out that the sun did in fact exist in the ancient past.
The swarthy races historically did not shield their eyes and heads from the sun. Feather Indians didn't do it, Africans didn't do it, Meztizos didn't do it. They don't have history of covering their heads for practical reasons.
The pale skinned races historically did, because we actually figured out that heatstroke sucks. Men and women alike wore cowls frequently because our race is more vulnerable to the sun.
The sole exception are the various jeet races, the dot Indians and their genetic derivatives the arabs. Both groups claim to cover their women's heads or faces for "modesty", in itself largely a coping mechanism for their predisposition towards raping anything they see.
Catholic women used to be obligated to wear a head covering only during mass. It was never an outside of mass thing. I can't speak for the Orthodox or other Christian churches.
There may not have been an obligation, but it used to be a cultural thing that everyone in the West used to wear some sort of hat or other head cover when in public. Kinda weird how that just sort of ended in the 60s.
Women don't need additional head coverings besides just keeping their hair long.
Doth not even nature itself teach you, that, if a man have long hair, it is a shame unto him? But if a woman have long hair, it is a glory to her: for her hair is given her for a covering.
1 Corinthians 11:14-15
It's irrelevant if Catholics, Orthodox, and Muslims argue over which of their man-made traditions came first.
Coincidentally I'm reading through 1 Cor. According to my Archaeology Bible starting from v10: "Women were to cover their heads because in the first century a woman with uncovered hair was signaling that she was single or sexually available, thereby shaming her husband...In Greco-Roman culture, long hair on a man was the hairstyle of a juvenile or barbarian; it signaled an effeminate, weak man, easily conquered."
If you can't point to a scripture that says a woman should cover her head, then it's a man-made tradition that Christians are not obligated to respect.
And the ahistorical nonsense continues.

Christians see it as a sign of virtue.
Other religions see it as a magic talisman against rape.
Heh.

Same goes for Orthodoxy. Women are obligated to cover their heads within the church, not outside of it. Some do anyways, but whatever.
