Catholic women used to be obligated to wear a head covering only during mass. It was never an outside of mass thing. I can't speak for the Orthodox or other Christian churches.
There may not have been an obligation, but it used to be a cultural thing that everyone in the West used to wear some sort of hat or other head cover when in public. Kinda weird how that just sort of ended in the 60s.

Same goes for Orthodoxy. Women are obligated to cover their heads within the church, not outside of it. Some do anyways, but whatever.
