When there’s a story about some homeless black guy killing a person on an NYC subway, that’s a direct result of the policy of the city, and the victim is usually an adult who lives in the city. There’s a pretty good chance that “this is what you voted for” (or at least tacitly agree with, if it’s a non-voter) applies. One can still raise some moral issues with it, of course, but it’s not exactly equivalent to saying similar things when a natural disaster kills children.
Absolutely, it's different with children. But I find it too close to comfort. I don't think people should wish ill on people simply for being misinformed, which is what most normal people are.
Might be a bit different for activists, I had a hard time being sympathetic to that 'defund the police' activist who got stabbed by some black bum.
I find it hard to believe that the majority of people in cities are “misinformed”. It’s at best willful ignorance born out of cowardice or hedonism.
I live relatively close to a city that's nationally famous for being a crime-ridden shithole. Pretty much everyone who lives there is one of three types:
Younger far left NPCs who wouldn't stop praying to Almighty Diversity even as they're being culturally enriched by a pack of future engineers.
Boomers who remember The Good Old Days and have conditioned themselves to be unable to see what's happening right in front of them.
Criminals.
Everyone else has left.
I don't think groups 1 or 2 are evil, but I do think they're sufficiently stupid that their continued existence is a threat to humanity and I don't feel bad when they get hoist with their own petard. The entire city could be wiped out and the only thing most people would mourn would be the house pets and wildlife who tragically lost their lives.
Unwillingness to learn is a sin, as is the pride it takes to believe you don't need to.
