Used to be men and even school boys brought knives with them everywhere without a second thought. My father is never without his swiss army knife.
Yeah, I have a knife on me everywhere I go. I've used it for just about anything except a weapon.
That said, in current year, I assume you're not supposed to bring knives to school, and I don't hide my knife in a backpack, pick fights with people, and then murder them.
Just to be clear, not saying you were defending him or anything. You're right. Personally, I think most men should have a knife on them.
In some states, like New Jersey, self defense is not considered a valid reason for carrying a pocket knife if caught with one.

Nevermind knives, teenagers used to bring their guns to school. They'd keep them in the back of their trucks to go hunting or attend shooting club(!) after school.

Sure, but the notion that "only morally bad people would carry a knife on them" needs to be challenged.
