Catholicism and American Christianity probably had more of a massive impact on Japan than either the Nationalists or the Socialists would ever like to admit.
Well, there WAS the time that missionaries started arriving in Japan and telling the story of the death and resurrection of Jesus, and started going "So, tell us more about this crucifixion thing.", studied the death of Jesus, took laborious notes, and..... proceeded to spend the next several years crucifying their enemies.
No, I don't remember the specific details, but it's fun to tell the story this way.
Add that to the lists of: "mistakes made during first contact"

They used to have a sizable Christian minority before persecution by the Tokugawa Shogunate drove them underground.
This is why half the time a cross is around, there is something Gnostic nearby.
The kind of things that would be blasphemous to any real Church, but sounds really fucking metal if you just like the trappings of it.
That approach gave us Neon Genesis Evangelion, though, and if not for that series...I may not still be here.
