This looks like a job for Steam to step in and make a Discord-like set up.
They already have voice, and you can text friends. You can also make groups. The next big step would be to make Discord-like servers.
I only suggest them because Valve are not publicly traded. And they already have essentially more than half of Discord in various pieces as it is on Steam right now.
I actually don't like the idea of putting all of our eggs in one game industry company's basket.
Just go back to hosting Ventrilo servers and individual forums. That system worked.
The 90s was still the best time for the internet: usenet groups, MPlayer, Ten, ICQ, S3M tracker communities, and forum boards without restrictions. Great time to be online.

As much as I like Steam, once Gaben vacates, whoever takes over is either going to jew it hardcore, or will sell Steam to someone who will.
Agreed. This is my biggest gaming worry.
When Gabe passes on, the next person in line might not be so keen to leave things as they are, and that could be the lynchpin for Steam.
