I very much enjoyed it. It had a great story, fantastic characters, didn't suffer from 100 cameo's every episode, treated me like I was an adult who could understand what's going on without an explanation, and most importantly didn't feel like it was written by people who hate the average Star Wars fan. Easily the best Star Wars since Rogue One.
With that being said, I am concerned about the second season, and I think it may be wise for anyone else who enjoyed the show to also prepare for the bait-and-switch. I do not trust these Hollywood writers and directors to not take advantage of a show about a rebellion against an empire and spin it into an anti-Trump, anti-White, anti-man, anti-Christian affair. It would be so easy for them to shove it in, and it would be very disappointing to me.
If they take this political angle, I expect another round of the 2017-2018 TLJ media and fan response which will take out a third crucial chunk of the fanbase. The first chunk left after TLJ, never to return. The second chunk left after the Obi-Wan show, who were the people that were willing not give up after the Sequel Trilogy. This last chunk of people, me included, are the type that will go in and out depending on the show or movie being released. If Lucasfilm does go through with the bait-and-switch (again, it's a show about rebellion, it has to be extremely tempting for some people involved in the production) you will likely lose me and those willing to just avoid the bad products for good.
Yup. Canonically, Rogue One is the next thing that happens after Andor. Season 2 is just reddit fanfiction.
It was OK, but they had to insert space lesbians, space antifa, and weird "indigenous" glorification
I did like how the imperial woman villain acted all tough but when shtf she just fell apart, that was quite refreshing.
Yes, the ISB agent falling apart in crisis was nice. Makes sense, she's a sheltered school student from the Core, not some riot commander savant.
Andor was a solid show. But it's not the Chosen One to forge the new direction for Star Wars. I'm glad the "gritty cynical rebels" concept got made, just to see what it's like, but ultimately, because it just makes the rebels into the Empire with smaller guns, it's just an interesting spandrel that ends up contradicting the spirit of the story.
The show does a fantastic job of illustrating why people would hate the Empire, which is a great area of development for Star Wars, but with a little thought it's clear that the malcontents and sociopaths fighting against it would just create a House of Cards-style backstabber government if they won, because that's all they know how to do. A lot of them are the type of person that sincerely believes they're defending Ukrainian democracy by whacking journalists.
The "spirit of the story" is that the rebels are genocidal terrorists led by religious extremist cultists. They're heavily involved in the illegal arms trade, and have strong connections into the criminal underworld and, on top of all that, assassinate multiple political leaders.
Genocidal?
Even if that were true, I'd still side with genocidal over geocidal.
I stopped watching Disney Star Wars in 21 but hear Andor is good. Probably would have a lot more viewers if Disney hadn’t run off so many fans. I’m still fine reading the EU books and comics. Can’t believe they messed up an Obi wan story. Sadly I bet they could have a season two where Luke and Leia meet each other and hang out and you’d have Disney shills justifying how it doesn’t break lore.
Don't forget, that black Inquisitor is the most pivotal character in the franchise, because she stopped herself from murdering kid Luke in cold blood, therefore she's an amazing woman, and the entire original trilogy would not have gone the way it had without her
It really says something when basic human decency (ACTUAL basic human decency, not the kowtowing they demand) is the high-bar for heroism to these people.
But what can you expect from people who are accustomed to getting accolades just for showing up?
We need a specific label for this behavior. When hostile people gain control of an IP and immediately begin threading their own stories into the foundations of the preexisting narrative. It’s a sort of deliberate vandalism.
We have a label: skinsuit
I'm fond of "humiliation ritual".
And you knew from the trailer that the black woman would be the real star of the show based on how Disney operates. Leia being in it just furthers the obsession with girl power. There is an EU book called Kenobi from 08 where Obi Wan watches Luke from afar and reluctantly gets sucked into a fight between Tusken Raiders and farmers. The author of the book wasn’t trying to be edgy or include characters that make no sense lore wise. With Reva you have someone who knows some major secrets. At the very least she should’ve died
How did they screw the obiwan story?
Well for me having him going on an adventure with Leia is dumb and I don’t like the idea of him fighting Vader before a New Hope. My opinion I know and i personally don’t count anything that Disney does as canon (my head canon is 1-6 and the EU so basically stuff that is pre Disney). I remember seeing an interview with the showrunner and she was talking about how she really was wondering how she could get Leia involved. Someone should’ve told her that her job was to make a story about Obi Wan. I enjoyed the EU book Kenobi by John Jackson Miller. Makes more sense for something between 3 and 4.
I really enjoyed Andor. It was a slow build up with good punches throughout. The prison episodes were fantastic.
Disney did a terrible job marketing the show. They pushed Obi-Wan hard instead.
The way I see it. They accidentally let a good show slip through their hands. I’m afraid they’ll remedy that in season 2.
Same, I think the activists will be looking for the next new thing to ruin, and a show about rebellion is just begging for some idiots to interfere.
i avoid trying new stuff for a while now. not worth my time investment, due to early cancellations or shifts in tone (bait & switch).
i heard good things about andor, but as you pointed out season 2 will show how it goes. if they make a 3rd season and all those 3 seasons are deemed good then I might start watching it.
Yup. I left in the first chuck. I used to be a hardcore fan. Star Wars battlefront 1 and 2 will hold a special place in my heart
Andor was mid at best. Disney just spent way more money on shilling it and trying to do an awards push.
r/television hasn't gone 72 hours without an Andor dickride since before the first season came out
