I'll be honest, I've seen Japanese MEN cosplaying look more feminine than what Ubisoft provided so can understand their point.
Western game devs at major studios are shit at representing attractive women nowadays.
As for not Japanese, Ubisoft have constantly gotten Chinese and Japanese mixed up in promotion of this game so wouldn't be surprised if native Japanese can tell she was modelled off Chinese whereas outsiders can't tell.
You can tell by some of the hairstyles. Nothing of this is Japanese and intentionally so. If you want an authentic Japanese ninja game play Shinobido or Tenchu, a lot more fun and actually Japanese feeling.
Face modeling is a scourge on the industry. Sure she looks Japanese enough to my foreign eyes... but like a plain androgynous Jap peasant with no makeup who sweats a lot. It's funny how that is probably one of the more realistic aspects of the game, but we don't need realism here. People in games/movies/tv should be attractive unless they are supposed to be ugly. Then they should only be "tv ugly".
she does not look Japanese by even western standards. In fact. Most of the Japanese characters look like Asian “just give em slant eyes and call it a day” mongrels
But
perhaps the biggest “not Japanese” tell, is the way they do bows. It’s fucking laughable. Literally, you will see now more formal bowing in a Japanese convenience store than you will see in this game. Nigga-Sama bows to feudal lords in this game with the same grace and provenance of a silverback gorilla, then he’s constantly splaying his nuts like a cross legged retard, instead of sitting is seiza position, as would be required for a person of his rank in the presence of said lord. The Japanese are right to be pissed, it’s a mockery of their culture.
If the comment sections of the Japanese Youtube channels I follow is any indication, the consensus is that Naoe looks Southeast Asian, specifically Burmese.
Much like how in many JRPGs you find super advanced tech long forgotten in ruins, at one point, the West once had the technology to make female characters, but it was lost to time, now only a few select holders of the long lost logia are able to make western games with actual female characters.

All of the Japanese on YouTube keep saying the game looks more Chinese than Japanese.
I think we're all obliged to take their word for it.
It hates Japan, so that tracks.

He ... look like a man.
Miss Swan
HA! Second time this week!
I love how they said this game idea came up organically.
Well yeah. Naoe is a man's name.
They will surprise us with a gay black man and an Asian transwoman. Nobody is spared the rainbow.

Youtube did that 4 digit shit to everyone when they removed the ability to have a custom name on youtube.
But
Seiza was an edo period thing, during the warring states they all sit cross legged even when bowing from the sitting position.
