This is after the families of the Sandy Hook shooting victims rejected a settlement of $55 million over 10 years that would have seen Jones able to retain control of his assets and earn income to pay off the debt.
...While Chapter 11 protections could have led to a larger payment to the families of the victims, they feared it would allow Jones to continue broadcasting to his fans....likely leave the families with less than $4 million between them after legal bills are paid.
These normal people turning down $50+ million totally prove just how Wrong and Bad Alex Jones is. These are clearly not crisis actors, and are exactly who they appear to be. How could Alex Jones have done this to them?!
...he was ordered to pay almost $1.5 billion to the families of victims of the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting. The victim’s families had sued Jones for defamation after he had claimed the massacre that left 26 people dead was a hoax.
The whole thing would be a joke, if it weren't so evil.
I'm rooting for AJ to give them nothing. An untimely fire and boating accident doing away with his possessions. Move to Brazil or something and start a new studio. They are trying to make sure he has nothing, so give them nothing in return.
In what legal sense are those people even entitled to that money? Jones causes zero damage saying what he said, it’s not like he said the kids didn’t die or something, and everything about Sandy Hook is pretty much settled at this point. Does this just open up the door for more petty lawsuits?
I think its because he "defamed" them by claiming they were crisis actors and faked everything. Which could be considered extremely damaging to them socially and their credibility, if not drive them out of their communities at the worst.
That law is working pretty much exactly as it should in terms of them claiming it. The injustice is how he was railroaded hard without much ability to defend himself really (if he could present any evidence at all, no matter how dumb, to show why he thought that they should have no real case) and then a massively oversized payment at the end just to punish him for existing.
I think they are overplaying it massively just to make the case seem more legitimate, but after something like MeToo I think we can all see how these laws were meant to be used to protect us from someone ruining our life over random accusations.

Didn't his dipshit attorney accidentally send the defense attorney the ENTIRE contents of Jones' phone text records? Sounds like Jones had the opportunity to defend himself, but not the ability to do so in a way that would make him less fucked.

Probably to prevent him from just using his business to continue to defame them.

Keeps a mustache and calls himself Alejandro Juans
Sounds good in principle, although Brazil, specifically, would be a terrible choice.

Have you considered the fact that Jones Man Bad?
Absolutely legal because anything the courts approve becomes that.
Just? Absolutely not, but that horse is now glue and tar.

In any sane world Jones would win the appeal, especially in Texas. That said, it will cost him $50 million to get there and he may not win.
We're clearly not in a sane world though. :(
