It's called kayfabe. People don't watch the news or go on social media to become informed, they tune in for the emotional high. Pretend to care about our cause and we'll manage your emotions for you. Everyone knows that it is bullshit, but you can never say so out loud or you'll get cancelled. So everyone keeps pretending that the things that don’t make sense make sense, and they keep pretending that they believe things they don’t to avoid the social consequences of telling the truth.
