Bullshit, lies and the tyranny of low expectations: "Feelgood story turns bad as Sky humiliates Indigenous teenager who caught $1m barramundi". Actually, Guardian Australia, the kid is an admitted thief, and actions have consequences, even three years later. Abo or not. I should fucking know. (archive.is)

"Moreover, they have perpetuated a harmful and negative stereotype about Aboriginal young people.”

But they did do it, did they not? The type of behavior when consistently performed that leads to a negative stereotype?

Well he did admit to it on camera, so... Yeah.

At some point after being confirmed so many times, surely it is no longer a stereotype, but pretty much a truism, no..?

Stereotypes become stereotypes for a reason. They don't just spontaneously blink into existence.

The NT prison population is better than 95% aboriginals. They were all caught and convicted in a court of law. There have been several judicial reviews and the consensus is that NT judges are fair or even lenient towards aboriginal Australians.

There are massive, endemic problems in aboriginal communities with child rape, domestic violence, alcoholism and gambling addiction. There are massive problems with child neglect.

Right now there are huge problems with crime in the Northern Territory. Riots, break-ins, car theft, senseless vandalism, the list goes on. Want to know which demographic is overwhelmingly responsible for it?

Guess. Go on! Guess.

...

You racist motherfucker! How dare you!

Meanwhile any random crime done by a white male is just another glaring example of white supremacy

Idk, maybe my heart is on my sleeve today but I would have liked the anchor to talk to the victimized business owner before going live on air about it. If he did that, he would've known that the kids already made restitution for the theft per an agreement.

If the kid was dodging responsibility, then stick it to him. But he doesn't deserve to get humiliated for something that was already settled.

Contacted by the Daily Mail, Payne’s former boss Bob Cavanagh said the young man had “always felt so terrible for what he did” and he was an otherwise “good kid”. He had also offered to pay him back.

After the Stefanovic interview, Cavanagh told Sky News reporter Matt Cunningham he did not proceed with police charges at the time, opting instead to talk to the boys and their parents and they agreed to work for free on weekends.

My problem with that "leniency" is that he only got away with that because he's Aboriginal...

I guarantee you a white male of the same age and in the same circumstances would not have been treated the same, by either said boss or the police. Guarantee you.

Which makes the boss, at best, a hypocrite.

That is my problem with that approach.

The boss is treating the Abo kid like a misbehaving dog while any white kid would have had the book thrown at him.

My big move: I’d lived in western Sydney my entire life – but I found myself in the UK’s ‘happiest place’

Another "quality" piece about a fucking radical Muslim "representing Australia", from this absolute shitrag...

Maybe I'm getting soft or it's the old Glaswegian ancestry in me, but I'm willing to forgive a bloke for his theft at 16 years old, a theft during the tyrannical covid lockdowns. It's the kind of thing that got you sent here in the first place.

If it were a pattern, sure.

If he were unrepentant, sure.

But 1x theft as a 16 year old? Eeeeeeh.

I managed to go my entire teenage years without stealing a car. In fact, I've gone on many, many more years than that. I've not stolen a car even once! It's not something you do by accident, generally speaking!

Same. Although I did download a car once.

Stealing and damaging vehicles isn't typical youthful indiscretion.

it's hardly unheard of, though...

you could probably fill a catalog with songs about teens joyriding, then you get comedians talking about it, scenes of it in movies, etc.

I'm not saying it's okay, or that there shouldn't be consequences for stealing and.or destroying somebody elses' property, it's not and there should, but let's not pretend this is extreme behavior for a demographic notorious for making bad decisions, lol.

There were not any lockdowns in the Northern Territory, mate.
