This reminds me of the story of the Chinese generals: Chen Sheng and Wu Guang.

The very same.
Both Chinese generals were ordered to lead a band of soldiers to defend a province. However they were delayed by floods caused by heavy rainstorms.
The harsh Qin law at the time demanded death penalty for any government official who had shown up late, regardless whether it was their fault or not.
Since the two chinese generals were already condemned to die by the state they might as well take their shot at a coup.
