Pros: incredible English voice acting, combat has DMC levels of ingenuity for combos, self styled difficulty levels, somehow managed to make a game of thrones story while throwing in Godzilla monster sized epic fights.
Cons: the stagger system can feel boring, especially in mini boss fights.
I would recommend the game alone for the cinematics, voice acting, and not needing to shoehorn any diversity. The monster design and detail on even goblins to be vicious little Pygmies.
Fair enough, I personally enjoy being able to do a fire riser, proc with a mid air wind juggle then hit with a pet critical and a downed critical.
Sounds fun, but doesn't sound like Final Fantasy. But then I haven't played one since IX because none since then have sounded like Final Fantasy to me.
Been kind of a common theme. My favorite series have all gone in directions that make them unrecognizable as what made them my favorites. Metroid, FF, Zelda ... they're being made for other people now.
It’s final fantasy in every sense lore, cosmetic, and style wise. The fights are a massive upgrade from 15 to include real time control of a companion (dog) to assist in everything from follow up attacks to healing. It’s definitely not the turn based of the older ones, but they’ve been pushing away from that for over a decade now.
Yeah, but I play games for the game mechanics. Not the lore, cosmetics, or style. That's all secondary to the core game.
If I wanted an action game, I'd just get an action game.
This is an extremely gay response.
I kinda wish it was still turn based, but in all honesty I never have managed to get into any of those FF games anyway. I'm not even sure why and it's not for lack of effort. I guess I'm just not the target audience. Seems odd having gone through a decent handful of turn-based games.
Maybe when it comes to PC I'll give it a try. Definitely not getting a PS5 for a game I'm not even sure I'd like.
The final fantasy series is easily the most overrated series in gaming. The best FF isn’t even a standard rpg - it’s FF Tactics.
I really find it hard to argue from personal experience. I mean I've tried 3, 6, and 10 and I just never get into them. I might give 10 another chance someday. This even though I've finished a few Trails games, a couple Dragon Quest, Lunar, Grandia, Blue Dragon, Persona 5, most of SMT 3, I'm sure I'm missing something too. Just something about FF never gets my attention.
Well im not sure about the game series itself but you definitely cannot say that the music is overrated though. Final fantasy music is amazing
Yeah agreed. Square making this an action game killed the series for me. It's probably the major reason why atlus and falcom games have become the cream of the crop when it comes to jrpgs these days
If I wanted DMC, I'd play DMC4: Featuring Dante from the Devil May Cry series. That's really my only primary criticism with the game. It isn't Final Fantasy, it's something else, but they slapped that label on it for marketing reasons.
But mostly just that flat, boring loser, Nero.
Nero was it’s own problem of trying to pass the torch and create new combat aesthetics when everyone wanted Dante. This game has some similar mechanics to the Nero arm in combat but isn’t the forced mechanic at all and is great for juggling enemies and damage rotation
It’s definitely final Fantasy lore, monsters, and story telling. If you want to complain about 16 having a far better combat system than 15 it’s a little nitpicky, unless you mean going back to straight timed choices turned based as of ff6 or turned based on general? Frankly the combat in any FF was always outshone by the lore, world building, and story, which this game delivers. I can get wanting to go back to a class/ party system, which can work as the latest yakuza proved, but as far as being able to control your dog assists on the move to combo, heal on the move, and using cinematic combat queues like in re4, it’s a very smooth system that doesn’t feel overwhelming to story players and lets you go whole arpg ham if you want.
Everything I've heard about the game is great, even anti-Japanese games journalists have been giving it reviews like "okay, sooo the gameplay, graphics, cutscenes, storyline, and controls are all really good, buuut".
How woke is it?
So far the only “social critique” is slavery, and even then it’s empire combat thralls who are used like fodder with the main “rebellion” hub being pro capitalism. So less woke than really 99% of current games and if I had to scale it, maybe GoT season one level of woke minus the gay sex scenes.
Honestly, I was waiting for it when it releases on PC, but then I saw the absurd amount of cutscenes in the game. I can tolerate big cutscenes at the beginning to setup characters, their relations, the world building, etc., but the whole game is "Fight 3 pack of useless mobs, fight a cool boss, then watch cutscenes for 40mn. Oh, you're done with the cutscenes, ok walk there, then watch more cutscenes" Repeat that like 30 times and that's FF16. Oh, and add fetch quests as side quests too.
Sorry, that's not a game to me. I don't care how good the characters or the story is, it's a video game, I want to play it. The fact that the gameplay is good is even more frustrating, cause you just want to play and do cool combos, but the game is just like "Nope, sit there, enjoy the drama". Imagine Doom or DMC but you only play 1 out of 4 levels, the other 3 are just cutscenes.
I'm sure this game will be very fun in a year+ when it comes to PC.
Inb4 someone starts crying BuT tHeRe'S a GaY mAn!!
Glad you enjoyed it. I gotta wait for next year at the earliest.
There’s a gay guy?
If that's a serious response, then this whole gay guy ordeal is even LESS of an issue than I thought. I'd presumed it was in your face main story, that it was the Bahamut guy or something. If that's not the case, this seems even more non-issue.
I took it as semi androgynous possibly gay guy that’s in almost every Japanese game/ manga/ anime
There was an xbox360 jrpg where the like mysterious hero that was aiding you all along the game ended up being the gay friend that you thought died at the beginning and he was just like ‘I’m too fabulous not to have a fun costume’ and that was just it.
I heard it plays on 30fps, not 60fps. That's make or break for me
I’m playing on a ps5 with a Samsung 50 inch 4k and have had no frame rate issues, no graphic tearing, and no drop in quality.
Is it running at 60?
There’s a graphics and performance mode, been running graphics with no issues so far
