In Apple News, Apple has made it so if you replace the sleep sensor on a Macbook, it will no longer work, even if you swap it between two brand new MacBooks because the part is serialized. (youtu.be)

If you aren't a creative who absolutely needs Apple why the fuck would you ever buy their products?

It's just throwing away money for no purpose.

You're not wrong, but most other manufacturers are right behind them in terms of removing functionality and ability to repair. Everything is a proprietary form factor glued together in an impossible-to-fix blob.

Turns out desktops are still superior to laptops

Except in a few specific areas like - of course - portability, and power usage. But the latter is very niche.

Yeah, but if you're going to prioritize portability you're always going to get screwed, and you know it.

As for power usage, you can build incredibly efficient desktops.

It's why I have a large desk with tons of cable routing capability. I'll never willingly give up my modularity or customizability.

if you really need that native Unix layer of macOS for some in-house tools.

Microsoft bought Ubuntu to take away that reason, didn't they?

Ubuntu hasn't been the "go-to" distro for like half a decade.

Sure, but it's a distribution with Windows integration. M$ had to have had some sort of plan behind putting it in.

If you need Apple, you aren't creative.

They perceive social clout. I won a fancy ipad in a contest a while back. It was and still is my most impressive mobile device in many ways and has stayed lightning quick with solid battery. But even after all the things I have used it for, I still wouldnt buy one. Even a used one, even to replace it. It is just too much money. I can get it done worse for like $100 and I am very comfortable with worse in this context.

Also doing anything outside of apple's will on the thing is a PITA. Android is much more flexible. But then, a real computer is better, and 99% of the time you can safely bet the farm that if I want to do something like that I'm sitting on my butt at home with access to a slew of machines and operating systems. It's sad because it takes apple's nice high quality device and puts it at the bottom of the barrel, despite prices to compete with gpu-equipped desktop computers.

Didn't apple admit to intentionally slowing down old devices over time? Or maybe draining the battery quicker. In any event, yeah one of my pet peeves with computer devices is how they get bloated and slow over time. I don't ever want to wait for a computer.

Compared to the battery degradation I have experienced on my cheapo android phones over the years it has done very well. It doesn't get much use though. It's the best "player of appstore bullshit" in the house but it collects dust for periods of time. Last time I used it regularly I was playing a port of Planescape: Torment. If I ran a business it would be half of my point of sale terminal and I would thank heavens I had it but the thing is otherwise a big expensive time waster. Its main function could definitely be to keep up with the Johnsons.

Upvoted for Louis, but anyone who willingly buys Apple at this point knows what they're getting into. Lack of customization and proprietary lockout are features.

The problem is that manufacturers look at what Apple does and copies it. The iPhone didn't have a user replaceable battery. Now all the mainline phones don't have user replaceable batteries. The iPhone removes the aux port. Now all the mainline phones are removing the aux port.

This is coming from the company who admits to purposely degrading older phones over time to drive up sales. I'm not shocked.
