A few reasons why small-town Englanders might protest one and not the other:
Ukrainians have much more Western-aligned values or may at least respect their host country.
They're women, so less threatening (to people other than you- no offence).
They're actually fleeing a "war", so people have "compassion" for genuine asylum seekers. (I don't remember there being war in France or any other intermediary countries, so why the hell are they here <shrug>)
It's different when it's happening in your back yard. Either because they haven't had any migrant shipments before or nobody realised it was happening.
