These weren't 'dumb' people that got tricked into doing it, they were postgraduates and doctors. Smart people might be able to come up with new discoveries and theories but lack the critical social awareness that we have to know when a situation doesn't seem right or know to avoid something that seems to be a trap or a cult.
There's also the same factor that academics, autists and introverts love to blab unsolicited about their areas of expertise and interest, particularly when they finally find a party expressing even the most minimal level of interest.
