Except it sucks just like nearly every Sonic game. Remember those "Developer Remakes x in Unreal 4" videos from a decade ago? Well, now you finally get to play one of them.
i've literally never understood the appeal of sonic. i played it a couple times on a dreamcast in the dentist's office in middle school and it never impressed me.
I considered buying it but held back. I watched a lot of gameplay. My assessment was that the core gameplay looked good, but the open world does not. It's empty except for the spattered ramps, floating rails, and bounce bumpers. Trees, grass, rocks, water. That's it. There's the occasional stone tower dropped onto the map with a collectable at the top. There are few enemies (gameplay from September had NO enemies in it, leading me to think they're completely tacked on) and what few boss enemies it showed looked like absolute shit with PS2 grade models.
So they went open world which is new to Sonic (and Team Sonic, apparently) but did very little with it. The rest is bog-standard Sega-effort unevolved mediocrity.
I watched a few minutes of a lets play and it looks like the same janky crap as always.
Its truly amazing how they haven't made a good game since Adventure 2 that doesn't rely on pure nostalgia (Generations).
You'd think they'd have given up and just copied the Adventure games again just to stay afloat, but instead now its tech demo open world.
Until you actually play the game and realize it's shit.
From what I've seen it needs a bit more polish, but core game and ideas work really well.
Sonic just can't catch a break. I really want to see Sega actually produce a good Sonic game, here's hoping.
I don't remember what years they came out, but I enjoyed Sonic Generations and Sonic Mania so it hasn't been all bad.

Because I want to go fast
The 3D ones are all ass. People just like the character. IMO the only truly fun Sonic games are the handheld ones. Advance trilogy and Rush on the DS.

Open world Sonic does not appeal to me but it looks nice and plays smoothly. Not a bad game.
