Massive numbers of Poles died in these deportations. Half million at very least, perhaps well over million. Many of those who survived were rescued by Anders (including masses of women and children whom he took on his epic odyssey, and most of his soldiers were middle aged or older because the Soviets have already conscirpted the young men).
Some of Poland's national heroes have CONVERTED TO ISLAM just so they could fight Russia in the Ottoman service. Even the country's greatest poet died in exile in Istanbul.
He was ethnically Jewish Lithuanian btw. His most celebrated poem begins with "Lithuania, o my fatherland!". Every Polish child learns into recite it solemnly.
