The first time I heard about the Scully Effect where apparently it’s important little girls see scientists on tv so they can grow up and be one was when Eric July was debating an sjw who defended representation in entertainment. I saw someone bring it up today but I never understood this argument. You can be inspired to do something but you still have to put forth the effort. I’ve always loved sci-fi and was interested in space but in my younger years I was too lazy to try to be an astronaut.
I guess this is why every engineer or scientist on tv now is a woman. Just like with hobbies they refuse to accept that certain fields attract more males.
I know engineers from years past said that they were inspired by Scottty on Star Trek but they still had to work for it. I guarantee a lot of other guys liked the idea of engineering but never put forth the effort.
Sorry for the rant but I’m so tired of this logic
Its part of the marxist religion of inverting every hierarchy until utopia magically emerges from the chaos.
Women shouldn't have "careers". They should be supporting their husband, their children, and maintaining the relationships with their extended family and local community.
The push to get women working, and to denigrate monogamy and motherhood, is part of the push to destroy families and communities. Strong families and communities support the existing culture, instead of overthrow in a revolution of retardation.
Yes. Nobody asks what do we need woman scientists for? The point of science is replicability. Everything a woman scientist does can also be done by a male scientist. It's not that there's a shortage of scientists, so why should we inspire women to enter into science in the first place?
Control. Plain and simple. If they fill all of the available slots with their ideologically driven "scientists", who are there for the diversity hire and not to do actual science, they can control the results and release of information derived from the "experiments" that are being conducted.
It's a factor but not a major factor like the left like to assume/use as a reason to gender swap characters. You can be inspired by a character in a fictional show but without any of the underlying talent, drive and focus that's all it is, inspiration.
I’ve tried to explain that. Like I said with my extreme interest in space being an astronaut or working for NASA would’ve been logical for me but I didn’t put forth the required effort
You can lead a horse to water, but if he's not thirsty, he won't drink.
Narcissists see this as a problem and they try to shove water down his throat anyway, and that's abuse.
They crave the authority, not the responsibility. Dana Scully worked harder on that show than her partner ever did. And not because she had to, but because she believed in the value of hardwork and formed her beliefs upon the results of that.
Agreed. I love X-Files. Granted I am more like Mulder since I’ve always been interested in UFOs/paranormal stuff
Well, he had evidence from a young age. She did too, eventually. That totally changed his perspective.
That brings me to one of the great episodes about her taking on his role. The 4 Angels episode, where her faith was being tested/restored by the girls who were quadruplets and possibly the daughters of an angel. She didn't want to believe anymore, went out on the extreme like Mulder usually did, and the girl had a message from her sister. That ending really left me in tears.
Very good episode. I also liked the one where she sees her dad’s ghost
I don't remember that one. Which one was that?
Can’t remember off the top of my head but it was an early season
They're pushing women to the top of everything.
I follow professional golf and will occasionally check out the golf home page on ESPN's website. About a year ago, I noticed they started putting the LPGA (women's tour) headlines at the top of their article lists in a clear attempt to force interest in something nobody cares about.
You think that is bad, some of the golf youtube channels are nothing but golf thots tik tokking around. Remember, don't sexualize women, especially when they act in a sexualized manner.
I’m not very knowledgeable on golf but I would guess the men’s league is what draws most interest
Yes. Viewership numbers for women's golf are abysmal.
'Representation' is a vector for easier understanding for the simple-minded. In theory this is fine for stories pitched at kids - hell you see the same shit with isekai anime ('Hey NEET-kun, you don't necessarily have to be stuck as a loser, look at all the situations where you might be a hero!'). It can help foster aspirations.
But in retrospect we would have raised better generations of people by making them exercise their empathetic instincts better - through more moral tales, stories with better characterisation, etc - rather than pandering to dummies using characters that have superficially relatable characteristics to certain target audiences. 'look, a black scientist! you're black! so you could be a scientist!' A more valuable story in a white society would have a white scientist character whose struggle can make sense to the black kid too - that way you've conveyed something of what it takes to become that scientist irl, and coaxed the black child away from the lazy spiteful racism of the average BLM retard.
Tokenism is and has always been for fucking idiots. It's fine for kids to be fucking idiots temporarily as part of their development but progressives want to enable themselves and their pet minority demographics to wallow in childish idiocy for their whole lives.
EDIT: and as other replies have noted, it's no longer even about representation, inspiration or anything like that. It's now become a humiliation ritual to race- and gender-swap known franchises or test the bounds of plausibility with a certain character's sex or ethnicity. This 'scully effect' was irrelevant long ago and anyone using it is in denial or is trying to bamboozle you with malicious intent. Fuck the push for women's football in particular. It's naked subversion of masculine values and interests.
Amen brother
Using TV Shows and Movies to base major life decisions on is absolutely terrible. It's fiction for a reason and no, nothing in the movies/tv shows is even close to accurate. Kids growing up thinking working for NASA is like being Captain Kirk on Star Trek are retards who're in for a major disappointment.
People should be inspired by real people not fictional ones written by woke morons.
Well I’d love for us to have the ability to travel in space like in trek but the closest I could get to today would be NASA or Space Force. But I’m saying that a show can interest you in a certain field but it’s up to you to get the work done. Some shows and movies have made me check out books about certain topics (revolutionary war for instance) but I agree with you overall. There is way too much expectation for fictional characters.
I think it leads people astray. Sure it gets people interested but it does for all the wrong reasons. I'm saying it does more harm than good.
Understand
Sounds like a field that probably should be dead. What good has it done for us? And my tax dollars go to it. Useless.
I agree. It doesn’t go in all directions. I think ppl can put too much stock in representation. If I want to do something ill do it. Race and gender swapping is dumb I agree. Dumb dad is over the top but thankfully I had a great father and grandfather
Yes, it's true that people appreciate seeing someone like themselves represented on-screen, and this doesn't necessarily just mean race or gender. Seeing someone of your nationality, faith, sports team, profession, etc. represented in popular media can be cool and inspiring.
It's not a surprise that young girls would be inspired by seeing a woman scientist or woman athlete in media. Everyone enjoys it to some extent. However, the Left has taken this simple truth and twisted it for their own purposes. It's no longer about inspiring little girls -- if it ever was at all -- it's about disparaging motherhood, convincing women that careers are more important than families, and emasculating men, particularly white men, who are the primary opposition to the Left in the West.
Yea. There are so many reasons you can make a connection. As for the hatred of white males…I’ve seen so many shows attacked and it seems like it is simply due to a white male lead
Real engineers were inspired by an erector set -- not the TV
Superman and Spider-Man are my favorites because always look for the good in everyone and are idealistic
Same. Both are among my biggest "idols" growing up
Whenever I go to the back issue section or dollar bin I make sure to grab at least one of each
Most of the people I admired in media inlcuding books etc are white. I admired their character not their skin color because it was irrelevant. Now I am always doubtful of media with black people even though I am black because these fuckers have made tokenization so commonplace.
Same here. And so many modern day shows with black people are yet another “discussion” on race. My dad gets so mad. He always says can we not move forward
