I never got this. A translators job shouldn’t be changing it to appeal to a western sensibility. A translators job is simply to interpret the original artists intent in a different language.
Still, interesting read. I studied Japanese for 8 years and even tried my hand at some basic manga translating myself. I get that some things don’t play well going back to English as some things in the Japanese language don’t have English counterparts but yeah…your job shouldn’t be to change the vision. It should be simply to interpret what is being said as best you can replicate it.
I would not want to see what they would do to "Amachin is a self proclaimed male". I really enjoy the comedy of that one, it's basically about a cross dresser who looks like a cute girl and has a crush on his friend. Very funny moments and if it were to come out here it would be trannified. He's still a he and it is said so multiple times.
Its hilarious how many stories like this Japan pumps out, and the trannies are always acting like its a 1:1 translation to their western culture.
Instead of Japan having incredibly strict gender roles, and a much more lax view on crossdressing, which keeps the binary healthy and active.
