The 'free, democratic and pro-freedom of the press' Western country where I live is preventing me from visiting this website.

Our greatest failures of the 20th century was 1st and 2nd not breaking up Germany after the world wars, and 3rd not mandating the separation of the two Germanys be permanent

No, the greatest failure of the 20th century was not declaring war against the USSR the moment Germany surrendered.

The second greatest failure of the 20th century was not nuking the USSR the moment Japan surrendered.

Communists should have been pursued to the ends of the earth, just like the Nazis were. That's what all thought that derives from Marx should receive. Total annihilation.

The greatest failure was not siding with Germans in the first world war so the second one would never have happened.

No, the greatest failure of the 20th century was not declaring war against the USSR the moment Germany surrendered.

And what makes you think this would have been even remotely feasible?

You're 100% correct. Gorbachev screwed over all of Europe by allowing the two Germanies to reunite. He could have kept his troops in the GDR in perpetuity and ensured that they remained separate.

On the bright side I'm hoping this will inspire Japan to finally do the same and change their constitution. There's plenty of people that want to, but Japanese are obsessed with public image and not looking like warmongers. If Germany goes first it gives them some cover.

Same. A rearmed Japan is probably the only thing that would make Winnie the Pooh think twice about attacking his neighbors.

why? you think Japan that is under protection of the US is going to risk its neck for Taiwan, Korea (also under US protection) or Vietnam?

If they rearmed and started taking a more active role in the region's security I can see that happening, especially if they become less confident in the willingness/ability of the US to defend them. They know full well that the Chinese want to wipe them off the face of the earth and I can see them teaming up with other countries in the region that have similar problems. Right now Japan has a China problem. They'll have an even bigger China problem if Winnie the Pooh manages to gobble up Taiwan, Korea, and Vietnam.

Frankly they should do another isolation period, though this time they would end up coming out more technologically advanced than the rest of the planet.

They have to amend their constitution in order to increase defense spending, which is what they are now doing.

To be fair WWII ended nearly 80 years ago. Very few agreements in international politics last that long unless they have pertinent cause to renew them.

I think the longevity of Japan's restrictions is more of the exception there than Germany. Then again, being the only recipient in the world of offensive nukes on population centers is quite the exceptional circumstance.

The only member of the "allies" group you refer to that would be interested in holding them up would be Russia. No one with any power to stop it is going to give a shit if Putin makes a stink about it.

I doubt it.

The bad guys will actually lose the next major war. Theyve been drinking their own poison for decades and it hasnt made them any stronger.
