Playstation took a massive revenue hit from 2020 to 2021. From 17b USD to just barely 15.5b.
The pandemic was not to blame. Nintendo went from 10.8b to 12b in the same period.
Oh, and the fucking Playstation 5 came out during this period, and missed its sales mark by three million units. They lost revenue during a major console launch.
So what did Sony do that Nintendon't? Have a snarky social media asshole saying "ummmm excuse me but all lives can't matter until black lives matter brayden" while America was burning, that's what. It made a lot of people very, very unhappy with them, myself included. They sided with violent, racist terrorists like cowards, and they suffered as a result. I personally canceled my PS+ subscription immediately and haven't bought a PS5, nor do I plan to.
My guess is the CEO realized after that little stunt that game companies are better off shutting the fuck up and making games instead of preaching.
Yep follow the money. There comes a point where it ceases to be feasible to target the mythical wider audience, and companies shift to simply trying to stop bleeding.
Either that or they can stick their fingers in their ears and "roll left and die". I guess a couple of the corporate suits still have enough sense and greed to try and keep enough cash flow that they can afford their fancy cars and nice bottles of wine. Watch for golden parachutes as they try to make their exits without taking the blame.
Then watch CEO diversity hire roll the company leftwards into whatever ridiculous social cause is trendy in 2024 that we haven't even dreamed of yet, most likely destroying the company.
Then like most Videogame companies with sizable backlogs, watch it's corpse be picked over for franchises, brand names, etc. that you have fond memories of by basically everyone, and the slew of mediocre sequels and revived studios with no connection to the original creators get hyped up with hollow ad campaigns as your inner child becomes more and more disgusted by what happened to his heros and idols and fades away leaving you dead inside.
Turn off the internet. Go play your PS1 or PS2. Remember the PlayStation as it was, as it still is, and divorce it from the modern caricature that is trying to attach itself to the same place in your mind.
I'm currently the record holder on a very old video game. Anybody, want to take a crack at it? Pepper II is my favorite game from that era that hasn't be re-released ad nausium.

That's not limited to gaming, of course. I mean, I get why companies do it, or, why companies think that it's a good idea.
What I really don't understand is, why people think any of this virtue-signaling bs is anything more than either paid (when BlackRock et al are involved) propaganda or a marketing-stunt. Why would you ever think of a billion dollar company as a moral entity?

Hmmm. Maybe. Or maybe the difference between Nintendo and Sony lies in that stationary consoles are an obsolete concept. Additionally, the PS5 hasn't had particularly great games, as far as I know.
Xbox also had a record year in 2021. Sony (Playstation in particular, but you know what I mean) was the only one of the three to not only not grow, but lose a significant amount of money.
Xbox cucked too, but Sony was worse, and became more of a meme because of it.
I guess it doesn't have to be stuck to the wall all the time, but there's a performance advantage to running off the mains power, still, and that doesn't seem like it's going away soon.
Emboldened Leftists that got so used to everyone being forced to agree with them were probably going to open the company to harassment / hostile work environment lawsuits by agressively or violently reacting to differences of opinions on abortion.
My money's on Disney getting tabled, plus what MaskedMan said doing an awful lot to teach ceos to shut the fuck up and not say shit to me unless I pay them to. They're starting to learn almost all companies are in the service industry, and they should be seen and not heard unless the customer specifically pays them to speak.

They will be back to being activists as soon as they start making big profits again. They're just staying low until that happens.

Speaking of which...

Best part about Sony potentially imploding would be bloodborne switching hands to someone who actually wants to fucking use the IP.

Wasn’t the ps5 simply unavailable?

Someone learned from the Disney mistake.
