This is not that. Not even close. Cutting off financial ties to Russia was the dumbest fucking move as it ended any leverage anyone had, since money is all they respect from the west.
Here in Poland the Gestapo is a meme. People like to shout "Gestapo" at the cops if they're brutal (much more so in the past). But by far most of the killing and torture was done by the Orpo ("order police", not even really police at all but basically soldiers in garrison and mobile units), and perhaps even more so the SD security service and its local auxiliary units (pitting various ethnic groups against one another in also very paramilitary formations, for example the Ukrainians against the Poles and vice versa as with the 2 Polish battalions used to fight the Ukrainian nationalists), and yet they're almost forgotten. All of them are little known unless you actually study it. The Kripo (criminal police) was the cleanest as they dealt with regular crime. The actual gendarmes (the Orpo were habitually misnamed as "gendarmes") of the military police also largely dealt with just things like hunting German deserters instead of terrorizing or exterminating the occupied populations.
Let me correct myself, the anti-Ukrainian Polish battalions were set up by the SS-und-Polizei through the general Polnische Polizei as the Orpo units. Some others such worked for the Sipo (I completely forgot to mention the Sipo, the security police).
My distant relative from the German side (and from Germany) served in the SD and was killed by the partisans in Croatia. I know the SD had for example a Russian police "assault brigade" that after killing lots of Belarusians defected to the Soviet partisans and was then hunted down to last man by the Germans, among other eastern collab units.
So anyway (I've read a much more detailed article about then once), these Polish Orpo
policemen often participated in the pacification of Ukrainian villages, often committing crimes against the Ukrainian civilian population. On the other hand, Polish policemen convoyed and evacuated the Polish population threatened with extermination by the UPA. In total, approx. 2 thousand Poles served in the ranks of the Schuma [battalions] in Volhynia. The administration of the Polish [underground] government in these areas, however, strongly opposed joining these battalions, threatening to "be removed from the ranks of the Polish nation" for murdering Ukrainian women and children.
Because you don't get those kinds of spontaneous protests in Russia without approval. This one is a protest that involved a significant time and energy to put together. The only reason it's allowed to be there is because the state agrees with it.
