It's just cars driving around in circles for hours.
I never got watching professional sports. It's boring. Nothing ever changes (always the same rules, people, teams, etc) and it's just a medium for ads.
When you've grown up with the sheer variety that video games have to offer it seems so simplistic and bland.
As someone who was pretty interested in sports I think for me it started as something to do, particularly outside of the house with friends. When I started gaining interest I was a young 20-something in a new place by myself. Choices I had to not be a friendless homebound hermit come to bars/clubs and sports mainly. You can find things like nerdy groups, but I tried that a couple times too and in my experience I didn't really like any of those people (too much left lean).
There's also a lot of obsession there. I'm not into that level of obsession over things whether it be MtG or a sports team. So I ended up with some friends I liked going to games with. I tried playing some sports a bit too, and I did for a bit but the combination of years of being the worst player on the team and getting older and injured sort of did that in.
I've lost a lot of interest since 2020, but I'll still go to a game here and there for the same reasons. Even at the height of my interest though, I didn't watch much on TV but would just look at scores and stats after the fact.
Part of the issue with F1, at least since before I was born, has been the focus on aerodynamics. It produces fantastically high-performing cars ... that lose great big chunks of that performance the moment they get close enough to the car in front to even think about overtaking.
I used to find races like BTCC far more interesting, as those can actually do stuff like drafting - or WRC, as you've said, which normally has interesting stuff happening. F1 is largely watching a series of concurrent time trials, with the winner decided by who utilises the pit-stop gap to craft a punishing lead the others cannot claw back while they themselves are in the pits.
Nope, I do enjoy it occasionally (sometimes even going to see races when they're nearby) but I am unable to develop the detailed knowledge required to be an F1 superfan. But I'm that way with most sports. It's better as a group activity. When I'm by myself I have better things to do.
Racing is one of those sports that are fun to do, not so much watch (at least in my opinion). When you are doing it you have the adrenaline from the speed, the close calls, the nail-biting turns etc. When you are watching it...well...unless you are very very good at imagining yourself as being in someone else's place you will get none of these feelings.
This is much more a Mercedes collapse than Hamilton, formula 1 is more team vs team than driver vs driver. People just hate on him because he's pretty overrated and the media focuses on him. He is a very good driver, POSSIBLY the best, but the Mercedes car was unreal for several years. Engine performance, aerodynamics, handling setup, all the best. This also coincided with Ferrari fucking up on engines for a few years so the only real challenger for the championship they had was redbull for a while.
Now these new aerodynamic rules allow for "ground effect" underneath the car, and mandatory 15% ethanol fuel.
The fuel is proving to be a hard transition for the teams, the Mercedes engines that several teams run are looking underpowered compared to the others, the Honda engines that redbull and some others use had issues in the first race, but they make lots of power, and the Ferrari engines are great so far.
The ground effect turned out to be much more unstable than teams expected (there's rules to limit the use of simulation and wind tunnel tests) so cars have been 'porpoising' at high speeds, ie bouncing a ton. The new cars are all very different from eachother this year with the rules just coming out, so teams are addressing it in different ways.
The Mercedes design choices are making it harder for them to address it, so In the mean time until the engineers come up with a proper fix, they are lowering their downforce to try to avoid it in the first place because it can be dangerous (see Schumacher in the HAAS today, bad crash when he lost the ground effect from going too far over the curb) . Lower downforce means less grip of course, so the Mercedes cars are not very fast now.
That being said, once Mercedes figures out the fuel change, and their ground effect problems, their car will be crazy fast again. And I say that as a redbull and haas fan. The Mercedes cars are massive ground effect cars, which is super effective if they can get it to work. You get large amounts of downforce for very little drag, so they can run smaller wings and get really fast.
Ferrari and red bull, Ferrari slightly better car but IMO redbull has the better drivers, but they had engine issues last race and didn't finish.
Two cars with two different design philosophies, but very close. They did qualifying today, and the race tomorrow will be RB (Perez), the two Ferrari's then RB (verstappen). If either RB wins I'm up about $200 on the bet I made yesterday
Haas has gone from dead last to midfield so I'm stoked about that.
He was the beneficiary of the longest frozen car development in the sport's history. He would have won every single title in that era if it wasn't for the steward's call in Abu Dhabi.
Now that the car designs have been radically changed, his advantage has disappeared and he is shown to be just as bad as everyone thought.
The stewards call lmao. Verstappen would have clinched the title in Mexico if it weren't for the nigger getting everything handed to him by the FIA. Imola: Mercedes driver that is under the employ of the Mercedes team owner crashes and causes a red flag allowing the nigger to unlap himself and have his car repaired after he drove into a wall. Silverstone: he intentionally crashed into Verstappen and sent him to the hospital, not only was the nigger effectively not penalized, but Verstappen received a 15-place grid penalty because his engine was totaled and that's not to mention the effect it had on the cost cap. Similar shit happened in Hungary, and Abu Dhabi, and that's not even mentioning that the FIA changed pit stop rules mid season and forced all teams to use Mercedes's pit stop system which objectively hurt everyone except Mercedes, which cost Verstappen a victory in Monza.
Well, except before embarking on a journey of entitlement Hamilton had and has a ton of talent and determination ... which he has now trashed despite 7 titles by spending the last few years whining and demanding (and mostly getting) privilege in equipment, team order, and stewards' calls on account of his skin.
It's really worse, because unlike a Danica or a Bubba, he could've soldiered on, won probably equal accords, and been a hero for the ages, and will now be seen (mostly privately) as that guy who played the race card to win.

Watching sports = Boring Playing sports = Great
EmpLemon has a great video on NASCAR and worth a watch, but the main draw is/was (as morbid as it sounds) the potential for death.
I guess people need their kicks now that Liveleak is gone.
Love me some EmpLemon

First few laps, first 3 corners in particular, to see some crashes
I'll go to a few minor league baseball games a year but that's about the extent of my sports fandom.
Never understood the attraction of watching people turn left for hours at a time.

F1 used to be just a high-speed parade. Maybe it's changed since them but I haven't watched it in a long time.

Its because of racism?
Hope he enjoyed his moment in the sun

Wasn't her full name Danica Patrick into the wall?
