During the American War of Independence, there was a group of Patriots who wore British uniforms to pretend recruiting volunteers to fight against the Revolution. Any Loyalist who signed up and went with them was then quitely killed outside the town with an axe and then they went to another village to do the same, rince repeat.

If an "opposition leader" happens to be in charge at the time, they might say the country is sliding into despotism even if there is nothing linking the leader to the killing. When the establishment party is in charge, political assassinations are ignored or treated as random isolated incidents.
