I admit that I was certainly wrong about Putin's intentions. I don't think the CIA was being honest, though. Clearly Putin wasn't just going to seize territory he could already basically control. He did want to hit Kiev and take out the government in a lighting strike attack that the CIA did report. What he doesn't seem to want to do is a full scale conquest of the country. Maybe replace the government if given the opportunity, but not send Russian soldiers to occupy the border with Slovakia.
I honestly think they actually want him dead. He didn't play well with their initial puppets, he was a bit of a populist, he's previously worked well with Trump (even defending him publicly), meanwhile John Kerry keeps talking about Climate Change, and Biden pledged to send 500 troops to E. Europe generally.
I think they know the Russians want to kill him, but they think they can use the chaos to install a puppet regime.
