I think a lot of it, maybe most (but yes, not all.) is just shitposters shitposting. And I think it can have at least one positive effect of keeping the normies out. A place that becomes mainstream will invite the bland, corporatized, middle-seeking cancerous dreck that so poisons the modern media landscape. See: Youtube, before Google buy-out Vs. Now.
A good old internet hate-machine may be no good for informing the normies, but it is a good place for everyone else.
Essentially, there's a barrier to entry that creates a positive selection pressure: Only those who are capable of withstanding the shitpost may thrive here. Lolcows and normies will ultimately leave, after entertaining the masses with their rage for a short time.
This is well known already. There have been numerous instances of the FBI and others going on the chans and purposely baiting people; even going as far as to try and get them to commit acts of violence. Can you imagine? Our own Federal Police Agencies are purposely trying to get people hurt so they can "catch a bad guy." Never once stopping to consider that their own actions are what led to the deaths inflicted by the "bad guy" to begin with. To them, the ends justify the means. If the average member of the general public knew about this, they'd likely be blown away — especially those who are family members of survivors of mass shooters.
There are also a ton of articles about busts that were made because of glowfags were keeping an eye on certain online communities. Always be cognizant of what you're saying. Always assume there are bad actors in a community that want to mislead you. Verify everything yourself before making a reactionary judgment.

The most notable instance of this occurring besides Covid would definitely have to be with 9/11. They purposely perpetuated the idea of space lasers and other crazy crap in order to deflect away from their own sheer incompetence or complicit actions.
The point is, people don't understand what's taking place right now. To put it bluntly: We are are war. This is how the wars of the future will be primarily fought before it comes to physical action — through information. The people at the top, corporations, and politicians, spend millions upon millions every year to hire shills to infiltrate specific communities, gather data, and infect them with propaganda, misdirection, and lies.
Our weapons are our wits, intelligence, critical thinking, abstract thought, problem solving, and situational awareness. Sadly, there are far too many people who are completely unarmed.
