McCarthy grossly underestimated the scale of the problem. He thought Moscow was the source of the subversion, but it is actually Washington and London.
No, it wasn’t. Everyone targeted governments because they were the boogeyman. The subversive elements came from the arts and education branches. This shit was born from the well to do with nothing to do. George Bernard Shaw did more to advance communism in America than any politiboro in Moscow.
Truth is stranger than fiction, we want to have to big bad nazis to fight, not some silver spooned faggotry born from pseudo intellectuals with a vendetta.
Communists targeted the Ivy League because that's where you get ahold of rich people's kids, and rich people's kids are the future leaders of the world.

No, the source is humans. Because it's a human universal: there will be people who want the power to control others... for their own good.
And it's a constant balancing act, because the simple fact of the matter is that it is beneficial for society as a whole (and therefore the individuals within the society) to be able to exert some control over behavior. That's why human beings evolved this trait to begin with: it provided a survival advantage for the populations that exhibited it.
We could have utterly destroyed Washington and London and Russia and wiped Karl Marx from the history books, but eventually something similar would arise because the source is us. Not a book, not a man, not an ideology.
The existence of universal lust for power doesn't make our peculiar problem any less particular. Progressivism can only be produced by western civilization, which is why it bears all the fingerprints of Christianity. Our academics recognized this and made a concious effort at syncretism, producing such terms as African Socialism and Socialism with Chinese Characteristics. Islam's long standing feud with Christianity is why it has proven more resistant.

You're absolutely right about Harvard, Hollywood, etc, but I like the imagery of the ostensibly hostile capitals.
