I'm not exactly sure why but Obama has been doing stuff like that before. How long did it take him to release his birth certificate to shut the birthers up, 2 years or something? He could have done that immediately, it's not hard. (Also I hear that the certificate he eventually released didn't seem very genuine, but I have no idea what a genuine American birth certificate looks like, so whatever.)
He released a provisional Hawaiian certificate that was one of a famously fraudulent wave at the time. Hawaii was involved in an immigration scandal where they'd allow anyone to claim their kids were citizens without proof. Obama provided one of THOSE from that era. It wasn't just a bad answer, it was basically confirmation that he had no proof at all that he was American. Or worse, confirmation he wasn't and a dare to anyone that would have a problem with that.
