Its because they were worried about how the left would twist it.
They still think that the other side of this argument don't want us all to die in a fire. This isn't a pleasant disagreement, this is a culture war and I only see it ramping up. There won't ever be a coming together with the leftists and a compromise and live and let live mentality. The leftists will only accept complete capitulation and even then will use that to tear you down more. Never apologise, don't compromise because they won't they will just take and take.

Permitting the continued use of "black" and "white" to describe European and African peoples. It would be impossible to defend anti-whiteness if it were explicitly opposed to European ethnicities.
The 90s that a lot of the "moderate" liberals want to return to are where a lot of the modern woke left got its start. Including things like mandatory sex education in public schools, a distant ancestor to today's drag queen story hour.
The conservatives of that era warned us, and we didn't listen.
