Although algebra may seem like an academic relic — think cursive or home economics

Algebra an academic relic? Geometry, sure. Algebra you will need to understand most adult systems. Does this person think that it's some kind of abstract magical entity because it has a tenuous similarity to "abracadabra"?

It's like saying that learning how to write by hand is a relic because kids can just use a keyboard or a touch screen.

You can't understand how bad things are if you cannot conceptualize what ''per capita'' means.

If you go beyond intro level classes for math, physics, chemistry, or biology, then you're gonna have to become REAL familiar with geometry. Its also important for most any manufacturing, hand manufacturing, or construction enterprise.

I wouldn't call it a relic.

That still excludes the vast majority of people, but yes, relic is too strong of a word.
