There's a chechen thug who adopted a russian last name Surkov who served in the putin administation (even before he was a prez) and whilst i'm not entirely sure this is all his doing, he helped push the usual "everyone i don't like is a fascist" poison in the public discourse. Now, i bet this was a running theme even in the ussr, equating nationalists with fascists but in this instance he might just be the one who helped the ukrainians feel animosity towards russians on the basis of "oh they're fascists".

Yea but they weren't center stage like this. If anything is was the Communist factions that were more prominent in Exodus. They made the remnants of the government out to be literal cannibals and showed the Central Asian slaves out in the desert which was likely a homage to the USSR days.
To be fair, the first game was pozzed like that too. There was an entire stage (probably the lenghiest next to the final stage) where you had to raid and massacre an entire Russian Nazi faction. It's also where you acquired majority of your supplies for later levels.
I read and played the games way back when i wasn't really aware of how bad things are but both games and books didn't like both sides too much. I'd imagine there are finer details that i missed however. And i imagine the commies would just be ethnic russian reds too since ukrs would have issues with ussr but wouldn't name the j.
I think the former USSR states still hold a special enmity for the Nazis due to the betrayal and invasion of Russia in WWII, and subsequent brutal fighting that took place.
You can see this in the movie "The Best in Hell" which is a Russian war movie set in the Ukraine war. One of the Russians, is fighting to the death with a Ukrainian in close quarters, he says "My grandfather didn't take Berlin so I could surrender to you." The Ukrainian starts loosing the struggle. He manages to say "my grandfather took Berlin too", shortly before being stabbed and killed. ..man that movie was so tragic.
