Expedition 33 really embarrassed Squeenix. Turns out you can just modernize turn based combat instead of transitioning to shitty generic action combat.
Yeah, I was planning to wait until the full game was released over however many installments before picking it up, but then I saw streamer named Sebbywebz do a half hour breakdown of how they absolutely butchered my favorite character, Cid.
I'm never going to spend a dime on that game because it is an atrocity. All anyone ever wanted from a remake was a facelift and they couldn't even manage to deliver that.
Did the remake even sell well?
Remake/Game 1: 8.7 million by March 2025, 5 million in 4 months (April to August 2020)
Can't find the numbers for Rebirth/Game 2, but the Squeenix executives blamed it on making Rebirth a PS5 exclusive for a year
I would blame it on not making a faithful adaptation, but that’s just me

Persona 5 did it too and sold massively.

First game sold very well but then people realized that they're being nickled and dimed so their interest for the 2nd part went down the drain.
"hurr durr Square made it obvious it was going to be a trilogy"
No they didn't. If they did they would've put "part 1" in the 1st title, but then the game wouldn't sell as it did in the first place.
