I doubt they'll do that. Other than using bots to create false consensus the site's main purpose is enabling their troon power mods to groom kids. Can't do that if they cut off the supply.
Cant do that either without advertises paying for the upkeep costs. But we will see, but yes it would be a very dumb move. Maybe they will try something similar like X and just limit the post numbers/size from none subscribers.
I doubt that will happen. They need low friction for account creation so that it can continue to propagate bots and/or so that people continue to post on there to feed them data which they can sell to companies that need to train their LLMs.
The current mood is "grrr...mandatory ID bad" as seen with Discord, so they'd be gutting their best revenue stream if they impose the ID requirement.
Since metrics determined one half to two-thirds of all reddit engagement is bots they have a serious problem right now.
They are only really propped up by botfarms and companies like Google using it to train their AI models.

If anything, I think the more niche subs will probably found spinoff sites of their own like cringetopia did while those who frequented more general purpose subs like funny and IAMA will find some other alternative like bluesky or even the revived Digg.
