I hate that stuff when it sneaks into supermarkets. It's so often cruelty-farmed, but they hide the labels. Not the exact same issue, but I also live near a big farming area that has cows, but the markets are bringing in random shit from other countries. And it's almost all extra-cruelty: Kosher, halal, maximum animal-abuse in the slaughter process.
NZ has no predators and the South island is almost empty, the sheep just free roam massive grasslands with the odd fence separating different ranches. There is green grass available all year round because of the maritime climate.
Aus is similar in that it has insane amounts of free land for ranching but it suffers from draughts so they have a more industrialised process with slightly more overhead costs with feed lots during summer. But because they can farm so much land their feed costs are insanely low.
Taxation, it's all about "baseline taxes".
Any sort of farmer or rancher has to burn a lot of fossil fuel to operate. This cannot be avoided. Higher fuel costs in Canada (thanks to the Liberal's "carbon taxES" there's two of them on fuel!) lately means that costs went up sharply. Either prices have to go up or costs need to be cut just to balance the books. Even when farmers have a bumper year & make money? They get the hell taxed out of them.
Inter-provincial trade barriers still exist, somehow. Despite 11+ years of Liberals promising to at least lower them, they still get sur-taxes if you buy something from New Brunswick, but NOT if you buy the same thing from New Zealand :/ That's lethal.
Oil too. But then, AB pays for their welfare, so they can afford a shipping surcharge, and keep voting Liberal (I know CPC is not much better, but better than this)
We also import beef from australia and new zealand. and somehow it's cheaper than Alberta beef.
I can't even begin to explain that one.

Many of the Eastern Canadian grocery store chains have been selling NZ ground beef for $5-6/lb of late.
The logistics make zero sense, let alone the fact that the Syrupidiots should at least be able to feed themselves with protein domestically.

Even if the Kiwis costs for raising cattle were free, it still makes no economic or logistical sense to be dumping their beef into Leaf supermarkets.
Ground beef is one of the few things that Canucks should be self-sufficient.
We have access to every natural resource you can imagine;
Beef, grain, pork, poultry, potatoes, vegetables, fish, fresh water, oil, LNG, lumber, copper, zinc, gold, hydro-electricity, etc, etc
The only reason we aren't living like Saudis, let alone self-sufficient, is terrible governance.

Canadian here.
I will say this: standards of living are dropping, and they are dropping FAST.
The bus is barely unusable right now, so many drivers callin in sick/snow. I hate living here

Man, this sets up so many pranking opportunities.
That's the point
Don't worry we also wont use that gas at home.
