All I could come up with was Carla from Cheers.

The 'childhood friend' archetype in anime seems like it fits that bill to me. I'm thinking of the also-ran heroine archetype who either out of insecurity or self-sabotage helps to hook a male friend up with other women despite wanting to press the advantage herself.
I can't think of any examples out of hand but I feel like I've seen the dynamic irl. Sigma male types and guys who don't show obvious interest - or sometimes guys who've already been friendzoned themselves - sometimes have female friends who'll examine their interest in other women as a type of flirting, or to find out if they're gay. The more the guy plays along, the more the initial woman risks bracketing herself as 'just a friend', whether she likes it or not.
Examples... How about FF7 Tifa for those who pick Aeris?
Tifa fits the bill.
Except aren't they a couple in Advent Children?
I don't remember AC at all and feel better for it. Weird because I was still young enough to feel fanboy hype at the time.
AC was ground zero for all the stupid, convoluted shit we now suffer through with the Compilation of Final Fantasy VII, most recent being FF7 Rebirth.
They are, somewhat.
But she knows she's both second place AND in a weird spot romantically. That the dead girl Aeris was his actual love interest, and that Zack is actually the one who loved her, and Cloud inherited some of Zack's memories, and thus his affection for her, so it's a secondhand love, at least all the initial attraction.
An actual situationship, unlike most presentations of it.
