Well, after the "good intentions" of the Northerners to ban the importation of new slaves? Breeding them became a huge industry. Before the Civil War broke out the sales of slaves greatly out $$$ the sale of cotton.
Meanwhile in French Haiti they continued importing them wholesale. They'd work them to death & bring in more since supply outweighed demand due to the US banning.
