That's a very ignorant comment. Despite all the whining, modern USA is still the richest country in the world with most amenities and best opportunities.
Compared to that, tsarist Russia's common folk lived in absolute squalor that was thoroughly enhanced by years of royal family's lavish lifestyle, suppression of scientific progress and deep corruption in military (bad ammo supplies and soldiers getting fed rotten meat while someone was appropriating the funds for that all).
Not to mention that tsar has pretty much wiped his ass with all the WWI military losses (million dead, 3 million wounded & maimed, at the very least) by abdicating and exiting the war. If you felt outrage by Afghanistan, well, compare it to this.
You may think whatever of communism, but people then had all the reasons to hate Romanovs & nobility.
