John Ratcliffe died in December 1609 during the "starving time" in Jamestown, Virginia, after being captured and tortured by the Pamunkey Native Americans. He was invited to a gathering with the tribe, where he and 14 to 25 fellow colonists were ambushed under the pretense of a trade for corn. While most of the men were killed, Ratcliffe was taken alive and subjected to a particularly gruesome execution. He was tied to a stake in front of a fire, and women of the tribe scraped his flesh from his bones using mussel shells, tossing the pieces into the flames as he watched. His face was skinned last, and he was then burned at the stake. This account is documented in an eyewitness report by Captain George Percy, which was later recorded in historical texts
