Have you seen the sets and size of the casts they put on? These are "artists" and drama kids, so no expense will be spared on making it as grandiose and extravagant as possible and since its Broadway they are given far more leeway on budgets for the sake of optics and showing off to the ultra rich who sometimes show up and bring entourages who might "notice" one of them to kickstart their big careers.
Its ironic because literally any other play in existence comes about under shoestring budgets and extreme crunch pressure.

Having been a theater kid once myself--and I still love to act--no, I didn't know how much Broadway overspent.
Seems they really are a mini-Hollywood, complete with money laundering.
Don't forget the race quotas.
I was a music kid, not a theater kid, but hey, solidarity.
Music kids have to read music and learn to play an instrument.
Don't compare them to theater kids.
